Judith Ortiz Cofer says, “The Island travels with you.” What part of your culture, family, or identity do you feel “travels” with you everywhere you go?

I get my looks from my mother and everywhere i go i feel as though i am a part of her and shes always with me. My tan skin tone, my hair, and eyes come from my mom. As though this isn't culture that's what i feel is the one thing i carry with me from my family. My family and i aren't on the best terms but my mom is always my one supporter no matter what.

Which learning method do you enjoy the most? Class discussions, worksheet work, or hands-on activities. Select one and tell why.

I enjoy group work best. I believe working in groups brings out other people's ideas together but also allows your own thoughts. Working in groups allows people to socialize and come together on task especially if another person is stuck on something someone else understands.

Write about an experience when someone assumed something about you because of a stereotype. What was the situation, and what did you do?

People thought i was gay because of my piercings, style, and hair. When i'm in class i had a girl say she thinks i look lesbian because of the way i look and i just laugh it off. But sometimes i wonder if people really think i'm weird and gay because the way i dress and color my hair or even the piercings i want. I just tell people i'm not and laugh because it's really not that deep especially nowadays or even just the grade i'm in or age.

i think i would've rather been asleep in my bed than present that. My inspiration is that i stand out from everyone and can spot me from a mile away .

Write about a time when you did something out of the norm. What was it and how did others react?

When i colored  my hair for the first time. Everyone thought it was so pretty and wanted to do the same thing. I have never done any other color since because i feel as tho the red is me. Its my car, my hair, my backpack, my water bottle, my favorite color i dont know what its not to me.

Describe a time when you felt completely lost.

I think a time where everyone felt lost was middle school, It's a time where everyone is trying to figure themselves out. you go through a lot of confusing things and at the same time find your group of people where you fit in. I know for me i was lost with my identity and i was going through stuff at home and school was a hard place because everyone was so judgemental. I didn't know who or what i wanted to be or do and my mental health was really bad but eventually i got help and support to be where i am today.

If someone tried to understand you using only your race, what important things would that person miss? Describe at least three other parts of your cultural identity that help make you who you are.

I think people would see me as just some kind of mixed hispanic because of my tan skin. But people should also know im white and i have never had any cultural awareness of being hispanic because I didn't find out i am partly hispanic until last year. People think i speak spanish and I've never spoken a drop in my life, In fact I don't like spanish i took french because it is a language of love.

What parts of your identity have had the greatest influence on the person you are today? Have you ever felt pressure to change, hide, or emphasize a part of yourself in order to fit in?

I think a part of my identity would be my hair, and face or the way i dress, when you look at me you think i might do something in the beauty industry and its because i do and i think it helps me express what i love and want to do as my future career. When people first look at you they see your outside and when your presenting business you want people to know you know what your doing. When i was younger I felt as though i've always stood out and have wanted to fit in with social standards at schools but i knew deep down i wanted to look different or i didn't like the styles other girls would wear because i knew that wasn't me and i've come to terms with that.

Prompt: Describe a meaningful family tradition unique to your culture and explain how it mirrors or contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations.

A meaningful family tradition unique to my family is the letter our name starts with. The letter our name starts with is C, it wasn't started on purpose just rather accidentally carried down throughout. It contrasts other peoples families because when you call off our names on a roster it all makes a "C" sound vs other families it's just differently sounding completely.

3 goals that i want to achieve this year

3 goals that i would like to achieve this year would be getting all of my hours done for cosmetology, getting the female lead in the fall shows and spring, and lastly having all A's and B's this year. My career choice is very competitive and the earlier in age you are licensed with what skills you have is impressive and will climb you to the top but it's about what makes you different from others.  I also really love theater so much and as being a senior doing hair and makeup as i lead a crew of 5 last year creating over 30 wigs plus having a huge role makes me have passion and hopes for more this year. lastly i've never had just all A's so i feel as though setting a goal of just all A's and B's is very reasonable as though last years are hard. in hopes of this year i hope all of them can come true and if not i can do something more of or better for myself.
